What is baby sign language?

Put simply, baby sign language is a means of early communication with your child. It is based on ASL. Remember, children are somewhat powerless unless they can communicate. Get ready to empower them!

Why sign with your baby?

Remember, Communication empowers children!

The real question is why wouldn't you want to sign with your baby. If you can communicate and make a connection with your little one before she develops speech, wouldn't you jump on board. Of course you would, it is exciting and fun! Here’s the thing to remember, you are not focusing on teaching your baby a second language by signing, but instead using sign language as a means of early communication. You are enhancing communication skills and giving your baby confidence in her ability to communicate with signs. This may lead to improved language skills, greater understanding of words and earlier use of sentences. It can also give your child the power to learn more and it can aid in the development of concepts. Signing with your baby provides one more way that you can interact with her, but most of all, signing with your baby is fun!

Some Benefits of signing with babies and toddlers include:

  • Signing helps Reduce frustration (and tantrums)
  • Signing can help reduce frustration for both children and caregivers...more
  • Signing allows children to clearly communicate their thoughts, needs and desires
  • Signing helps form stronger bonds between you and your baby
  • Signing may accelerate verbal language development.
  • Signing babies have larger vocabularies.
  • Older children that were signing babies often score higher on IQ tests.
  • It’s a fun time to share together.
  • Signing children tend to be more interested in books.
  • Signing also provides a way to talk to your children discreetly in public when they get older or when the situation may be embarrassing.

How to get started:

  • Start with just a few signs.
  • Incorporate signing into your daily routine
  • Speak, read or sing and sign together (always say the word you are signing)
  • Help you baby form the signs if she cannot
  • Watch out for signs
  • Always offer positive reinforcement for any attempt

Baby Sign Language Hawaiian Style:

Do you shake a shaka for your baby? Try shaking two shakas and you are signing "play" for your baby! See, you already know some sign language! On this site, I will discuss the benefits of signing with your baby, how to get started, tell you a little about the research on baby sign language, provide some useful tips, talk about why you should sign with your little one and provide some basic signs. I will also provide a number of links for other baby signing sites & products that may be helpful.

Where do I learn the signs to teach to my baby?

The best way to learn is to attend one of our workshops, or contact us for a private consultation. This will give you the most confudence to succeed, However we also recommend
watching Baby Signing Time or any other signing DVDs with your baby. Watching the DVDs gives you the clearest approach to learning the signs. There are a number of books on the subject too, many of which are listed in the suggested reading section, but nothing beats being able to see the signs in motion. There are also many free online sign language dictionaries and browsers. I have listed a few in the resources section.
